Talex GPS Speed Camera Detector

2nd in the 2005 Auto Express road tests Auto Express Road Tests 2005 have just agreed with our comments and have recommended the Talex GPS system to it's readers. It came 2nd only to the New Road Angel but that does have more features including an integrated laser alert. All in all, not bad for the 'new kid on the block'.

There is no getting away with the fact that speed cameras are here and are here to stay. In theory, they are only supposed to be located in accident blackspots but many say they are just revenue earners.
Talex, with GPS (Global Positioning System) satellite technology is not just a speed trap alert system, but a road safety device that will warn the driver of fixed, mobile and red light cameras.

Compact and simple to install and use due to its ‘plug and play’ operation, TALEX uses the Global Positioning System (GPS), making it 100% legal now and in the future. As well as providing valuable protection against unnecessary fines, TALEX helps to keep the busy business man or woman safe and secure whilst on the move. The device gives voice announcements to warn you when you are within 500 yards of a safety or speed camera and also confirms what the speed limit is on that section of the road. If the vehicle is exceeding the speed limit 200 yards prior to the camera, the system will advise you to slow down. TALEX also sounds an alert to confirm when the vehicle has safely passed the camera.

Benefits of the Talex include:

  • No false alerts!
  • Warning of fixed speed camera monitoring systems.
  • Warning of red light camera monitoring systems.
  • Warning of possible mobile monitoring sites.
  • Optional warning of accident black spots.
  • Optional warning of schools.
  • Optional warning of congestion charging zones.

    The Comprehensive database
  • The database of all of the above detection conditions is continually updated with our professional survey team all experienced ex–traffic police officers.
  • Mobile sites are continually updated on a weekly basis – making more use of the GPS engine than any other unit.

The unique approach of the TALEX speed camera detection system
  • Downloading the latest database information on a weekly basis minimises the risks of being caught by a mobile speed camera.

Novus Systems have decided to offer free lifetime subscription to all TALEX and TALEX Lite customers. They will need to visit http://novusgps.com and firstly download the new serial driver and then the appropriate download for either TALEX or TALEX Lite. There is no registration process and the process of updating the products is much simpler and overcomes some observed issues associated with anti virus software.

  • How It Works

Talex is our own brand name for the GPS enabled Speed Camera Detector. GPS stands for Global Positioning System, and it operates via a system of 28 satellites in orbit around the Earth. The signals from the GPS satellite can be used to pinpoint a position anywhere on the Earth’s surface to a very high accuracy (+/–5m).

The Talex unit can also work out its speed and direction of travel, its height above sea level, as well as the time and the date. The Talex unit can store around 150,000 positions in its database. These can be divided into different data sets, to distinguish between such positions as fixed speed cameras, possible mobile camera positions, red light cameras, schools, and accident black–spots. We can also sub divide some of these groups by speed limit, and allocate a voice alert.

Thus we can alert the driver to a fixed or possible mobile camera site, and give him/her the speed limit at that site. The Talex unit also has an LED display on the front of the unit, which provides additional information to the voice announcements. Whilst driving normally it will display the current speed.

When a warning is triggered, a chime is heard followed by an announcement such as ‘Warning speed camera 500 yards ahead – limit 30 miles per hour’, the speed limit at the camera site will flash for eight seconds, before going back to displaying the vehicle’s speed. This will typically happen at 500 yards from the camera position, (in some cases a 500 yard warning is not ideal because of the road layout). A second chime is heard at 200 yards from the camera site, and if the vehicle is still over the speed limit, a continuous warning is heard ‘Warning – reduce speed’ until the vehicle speed drops to the speed limit, or the camera site is passed.

The Talex unit is easy to install. In the box there is a small rubberised magnet, with a peel off sticky base. The user simply has to remove the sticker cover, and position the magnet on the top of their dashboard. Insert the power jack into the cigar lighter, and plug the other end of the lead into the Talex unit, then place the Talex unit on top of the magnet. It is now ready to use. The unit is very easy to update via the website.

There is no CD Rom to install first, the user simply logs onto the website, and plugs the unit into the PC via a USB or serial connection (supplied). The unit also has to have power from a three pin plug, (supplied). The user clicks the update database button on the front page of the website, and follows a few simple instructions.

Our back office facility does the rest. We at Talex have taken a revolutionary step with our database collection. Other Speed Camera Detectors may rely on Laser and Radar detectors to warn drivers of mobile cameras operating. We have always considered this to be a very unreliable method of detection. In the case of Laser detectors, they will often alert the driver at exactly the moment their speeding offence is being recorded. Due to the way in which the detector works, as soon as it picks up a laser beam, the speed camera operator has logged the speed, and the process for issuing a ticket has begun. Radar detectors are susceptible to false alarms, and are therefore set at a lower sensitivity than is really required.

These types of detector can issue many false alarms, or fail to detect correctly. Both Laser and Radar detectors are set to become illegal. Our approach is radically different. The police have defined and use designated sites for their mobile camera operations. These sites have been chosen because they are considered to be areas with a history of serious accidents. The mobile camera operator cannot simply choose a convenient stretch of road to operate equipment. We are therefore compiling, within our database, all the designated mobile sites. Rather than trying to ‘out detect’ the cameras we passively warn drivers as they approach any of these sites, raising their awareness of the area ahead.

This approach, regardless of the presence of a mobile camera operator or not, keeps the driver aware of their speed and more alert in general.
